Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest membership organisations. It brings together men from all backgrounds who share common values and enjoy building friendships, supporting their communities and developing themselves.

At Burghley Lodge, we believe Freemasonry is about people. It offers an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, enjoy lifelong friendships and become part of something bigger than yourself. This reflects UGLE's emphasis on friendship, community and personal growth.

Who can become a Freemason?

Any man aged 18 or over who has a belief in a Supreme Being can enquire about joining Burghley Lodge.

Our members come from many different professions, backgrounds and cultures. What unites us is not what we do for a living, but the values we share.

Do I need to know someone to join?

No.

Many of our members first contacted us through our website without knowing anyone in the Lodge.

We'll arrange an informal meeting where you can ask questions, meet some members and discover whether Burghley Lodge is right for you.

What happens before I join?

Joining is a relaxed process.

1. Contact us using our enquiry form.
2. Meet one or two members for an informal coffee.
3. Visit one of our social evenings.
4. Learn more about Freemasonry.
5. If you decide it's right for you, we'll guide you through the application process.

There is never any pressure to join.

What happens at a Lodge meeting?

Our meetings combine tradition, friendship and fellowship.

A typical evening includes:

• Arriving before the meeting to chat with friends.
• A formal Lodge meeting with ceremonies and Lodge business.
• Dinner afterwards, where members and visitors enjoy good food, conversation and friendship.

Many members say the festive board after the meeting is one of the highlights of Lodge life.

How often do you meet?

Burghley Lodge meets regularly throughout the Masonic season between October and April.

Alongside our meetings, we organise numerous social events throughout the year, including informal pub evenings, curry nights, family events, charity fundraising and community activities.

How much does membership cost?

Like most membership organisations, there is an annual subscription together with dining costs when attending meetings.

We'll explain all costs clearly before you make any decision to join, so there are no hidden surprises.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No.

Freemasonry welcomes men from many different faiths. Members are expected to have a belief in a Supreme Being, but Freemasonry does not replace or compete with anyone's religion. It is a values-based organisation whose members respect one another's beliefs. This reflects the UGLE mission and tone of focusing on what Freemasonry is, rather than defining it by what it is not. 

Is Freemasonry political?

No.

Members come from many different backgrounds and hold a wide variety of personal views. Politics is not part of Lodge meetings, allowing members to enjoy friendship and mutual respect regardless of their differences.

Can women become Freemasons?

Yes.

Burghley Lodge is a Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England, which admits men.

Women who wish to become Freemasons can join two well-established organisations:

• The Order of Women Freemasons
• Freemasonry for Women (The Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons)

These organisations share the same values and traditions and enjoy a positive relationship with UGLE while operating independently.

What do Freemasons do for charity?

Supporting others is one of our core values.

Freemasons donate both time and money to charitable causes, while also volunteering within their local communities. At Burghley Lodge, we're proud to support local charities, community projects and initiatives that make a genuine difference across Stamford and the surrounding area. Service sits at the heart of Freemasonry. 

What should I wear if I visit?

If you're coming along to meet us socially, smart casual clothing is absolutely fine.

If you're invited to visit a Lodge meeting, we'll let you know the dress code beforehand and answer any questions you may have.

Can I bring my partner to social events?

Yes.

Many of our social events are open to partners, families and friends, making Burghley Lodge a welcoming community beyond our regular meetings.

I'm still not sure. Can I just come and have a chat?

Absolutely.

In fact, we encourage it.
