Strength, Purpose and Belonging: Mark Ormrod’s Journey into Freemasonry

The United Grand Lodge of England has shared the remarkable story of Mark Ormrod MBE—a former Royal Marine, Invictus Games athlete and Freemason whose life is an inspiring example of courage, determination and belonging.

While serving in Afghanistan in December 2007, Mark stepped on an improvised explosive device and sustained life-changing injuries, losing both legs and his right arm. His recovery demanded extraordinary physical and mental strength, but it also led him towards a renewed sense of purpose.

Mark is now a member of Royal Marines Plymouth Lodge No. 9528 in Devonshire. He was initially attracted to Freemasonry because its principles and the people he encountered reflected his own values.

Finding a way

Following his injuries, Mark wondered whether he would still be able to participate fully in Freemasonry.

Rather than focusing on the difficulties, the members of his Lodge focused on finding practical ways for him to take part. With understanding, patience and appropriate adjustments, Mark was able to continue his Masonic journey and become an active member of his Lodge.

His story demonstrates that inclusion does not require us to abandon tradition. It means ensuring that everyone has a genuine opportunity to participate in it.

It also reminds us that Freemasonry is about far more than ceremonies or meetings. At its heart are friendship, mutual support and a shared commitment to helping one another develop.

The importance of belonging

Mark’s journey illustrates what Freemasonry can offer at different stages of life: friendship during challenging times, encouragement when obstacles appear and a sense of purpose through service to others.

At Burghley Lodge No. 9364, these same principles remain central to our Lodge. We bring together men from different backgrounds and generations, united by shared values and a desire to become better versions of ourselves.

Through our meetings, social activities and involvement in the local community, we aim to create an environment where members feel welcomed, valued and supported.

Every member brings something different to the Lodge. What unites us is the sense of friendship and belonging created when people support one another and work towards a common purpose.

Freemasonry for today

Stories such as Mark’s help demonstrate the continuing relevance of Freemasonry in modern society.

Freemasonry provides friendship, structure and opportunities for personal development. It encourages members to support their communities, uphold strong values and build relationships that can last a lifetime.

Mark’s experiences are unique, but the underlying message is universal: whatever challenges life may present, the encouragement and fellowship of others can help us find a way forward.

His journey is a powerful example of strength, purpose and belonging—qualities that sit at the very heart of Freemasonry.
